Myth Busters: Used Auto Parts

Roberta Willson • June 28, 2022

Since used auto parts became available, there have been many myths about them. We are here to debunk five myths and tell you the truth about used auto parts.

Myth 1:Used car parts don’t have warranties

This one is just flat-out: false! Some places might not offer warranties on used auto parts but at R. H. Willson, we offer a standard 90-day warranty on all parts. In addition to an unmatched used auto parts warranty, we have a large inventory of cars and parts to find exactly what you are looking for.

Myth 2: Discount auto parts are poor quality

This one is also false. If you visit a reputable salvage yard like R. H. Willson, the used auto parts inventory is in great shape. Part of having a 90-day warranty is that we know that we are selling quality used parts - we know what we sell and we stand behind the quality.

Myth 3: A used part will compromise your car’s performance

This is not true. Just like at R. H. Willson, any reputable salvage yard puts each part through a series of tests to ensure its quality and condition of the part. You can rest assured that the used part you purchase will not put your car’s performance at any sort of risk.

Myth 4: Prices are best at the end of the month

There is actually no “better” time to purchase a used part. If you need a used part and you find it at a reputable place like R. H. Willson, you should purchase it so you do not risk someone else purchasing that part while you wait for a “better” deal. Salvage yards like R. H. Willson are not trying to run tricks or scams, just offering quality used parts for your vehicle.

Myth 5: Paying cash reduces the price

Salvage yards are not incentivized by cash deals - they are legitimate businesses that operate just like any other business. If you pay with cash, do not expect a special deal. Here at R. H. Willson, we are proud to serve our community, offer used auto parts, and help lower your vehicle costs - cash or card!

A salvage yard is a great option! A salvage yard might give you more money for your vehicle or parts than from a private sale or as a trade-in at a dealership. Once you have decided to bring your vehicle to a salvage yard, now what? How do you prepare yourself before you arrive and what happens when you get to the salvage yard? Let’s go through the steps to get you the cash you want from your used vehicle! Step One: Make sure you have the title to your vehicle. In order to sell your car to anyone, you need the title to your vehicle and a salvage yard is no exception. If you cannot find or have lost your title, you can request a new one from the RMV. The requirements to obtain a copy are dependent based on which state you live in.

Did you get a letter in the mail from the manufacturer, car dealership or even check online to find out that your vehicle has a recall? What should you do, how urgent is the recall, what steps do you need to take to ensure your vehicle is at its’ optimal preference level? First, let’s put it into perspective. While a recall is not something you should ignore; there are over 400 recalls a year that affect more than 25 million vehicles in the U.S. alone. In addition, the average vehicle will have 4 recalls in its lifespan and recalls never expire. Now that we have some perspective. What is the first thing you need to do once you become aware of your vehicle’s recall status? If you purchase your vehicle new or used from a dealership, contact them directly and they will advise you. If you purchased your vehicle through a private seller, contact the vehicle manufacturer and they are required by law to either repair the issue, replace the recalled item or refund the purchase price of the vehicle, minus depreciation.
