5 Reasons For The Trend Toward Smaller Cars

September 25, 2023

The trend towards smaller cars has been in the works for awhile but this year was the first year that critics and consumers agree - smaller is actually better. Gas pricing are soaring, parking is expensive, the economy is still recovering and where consumers can save some money are on smaller cars. Smaller cars mean less gas, mostly likely a lower MSRP, which in turns would mean cheaper upfront costs or even monthly car payments. Let’s discuss 5 reasons for this trend.

1. Gas Prices

First and foremost, the thing that everyone worries about - gas prices. The price of gas has steadily increased over the past 5 years and even if it decreases, prices are still going to factor into your car buying process. The gas mileage difference is about 29 MPG for an average mid-size SUV vs. about 35 MPG for a midsize, non-hybrid sedan. This MPG difference would be about $1,000 per year.

2. New Car Models

The newer car models since 2023 have come a long way since the early 2000s. They look sleek, technology has advanced, and they are drawing a new level of respect. Sedans are directly competing with the SUV market with the bells and whistles that have dominated them in the past. The general consumer feedback is that car's new looks and new models are appealing to the masses.

3. Urban Lifestyle Trend

In 2023, we are continuing to see this trend; individuals and families relocating to cities. Even people who've stayed in one place are finding that their rural neighborhoods are being overtaken by a suburban sprawl. Having a large vehicle in an urban environments can be far tougher than managing a smaller one.

4. Maintenance

Car maintenance is inevitable and expected but when something unexpected does occur with your vehicle, SUVs and trucks will cost you more to fix or even general upkeep. On average, a small or medium vehicle will cost a little less than $1,00 per year and an SUV or truck will cost you about $1,100.00 per year. This is not a major difference in the expected yearly maintenance but when you are looking to save money and wear and tear on a vehicle, this could make a difference for you.

5. Eco Friendly

Last but not least is economy friendly vehicles. It does not have to be a hybrid or electric vehicle to the eco-friendly. This trend is not going anywhere and car manufacturers have responded. Although there are hybrid SUV and trucks out there, the biggest “bang for your buck” is going to still be in the small car department. This might even be the biggest reason for this small car trend, allowing consumers to play a role in helping the environment and even saving money while they do.

Conclusion
