The Float Drivers
The drivers at the wheel of the trucks towing the floats are members of New York City’s Theatrical Teamsters Union. They are only in charge of the driving; the balloons are all held by Macy’s employees.
A Few More Fun Facts
- Last year 49 balloons were being held by nearly 600 volunteers. These balloons have gotten over 60 feet tall!
- There were 26 floats last year with the Santa Claus float closing out the parade at Herald Square.
- There were 8,000 participants, including musical guests, entertainers, Radio City Rockets, and many more.
In short, this parade, which originated in 1924, has been through a lot and has turned into a worldwide entertainment extravaganza! Giving back is also important that is why the parade does spotlight many social causes and charitable organizations; this is something that continues to grow each year.
